EL GRANDE was launched in September 2004 at Club Colosseum, as SALSA REPUBLIC’s monthly special event. SALSA REPUBLIC, one of the leading Salsa names in London in the last decade was founded in April 2004 by two organizations, OLA LATINA & SIMPLY SALSA (SIMPLY SALSA later became Love2Salsa & S4Salsa). SALSA REPUBLIC ran a very successful weekly Saturday club night and special events at Cafe Rez (part of the Colosseum Complex). SALSA REPUBLIC quickly established itself as one of the iconic and most reputed Salsa names in London. With their Saturday club night SALSA REPUBLIC firmly established, the organisers behind the project, OLA LATINA & SIMPLY SALSA, launched their new big monthly event EL GRANDE at the legendary Colosseum Complex in Vauxhall comprising of the bar-nightclub Cafe Rez (later named Vox) and the huge Club Colosseum nightclub next door. The well located, great and spacious regular venues used, including the mighty Club Colosseum where EL GRANDE was held on the 3rd Friday of every month in Vauxhall, combined perfectly with SALSA REPUBLIC’s top Salsa DJs, dance teachers, performing acts and a genuinely relaxed, friendly and exciting atmosphere. We have started with a simple urge for exploring salsa music; find out how DJs narrate outside the UK & bring them to the UK – aspiring to be a window to the salsa scene worldwide. A simple ‘spin’ that concentrates on Djs, outside and inside the UK playing on the timeless, quality sound of vinyl; celebrating their collections, music knowledge, flavour and experience. Our first priority is the marriage of a good experienced Dj with a good sound system, so what we love the most – music, is expressed at its best. Adding to that an extra musical layer of live percussion, we strive to provide ‘Premium Salsa Quality’ to the dancers and music enthusiasts who join our parties. Finally, we aim to set high standards for what we believe makes an enjoyable and relaxed party, – a good spacious venue with the best possible mix of amenities to accommodate participators combined with a relaxed atmosphere for people to dance, enjoy music and connect with each other. DJ ERICK ‘THE SAINT’ The founder and soul of ‘I like it like that’, Erick had long had the desire to bring great DJs together from around the world and share their sets with […]
Our first Salsa experience was at a nightclub in Toronto Canada called Berlins where the Salsa night was hosted by Josie Neglia, it wasn’t until we returned to London that we decided to take lessons in 1992, with the first generation of UK Instructors Xihomara Granados, Nelson Batiste, Ramiro Zapata and Zina. We were first introduced to crossbody style dancing by Pedro Gomez and have since gone on to work with and learn different styles from such salsa luminaries as Eddie Torres, Nelson Flores (Descarga Latina), Thomas Guerrero (Santo Rico), Frankie Martínez and many others. Owing to these influences, we have experienced styles ranging from Columbian and Cuban Salsa to the Cross Body styles “On 1″ / “On 2″ and Cha Cha Cha. In May 1999, we had our first Salsa Congress experience at the first SalsaWeb Convention (which was hosted in Washington DC), we were really inspired by the amount of talent on display there, this plus the encouragement from Nelson Flores and some friends who wanted us to teach them, prompted us to start MamboCity which we did in August 1999, our first class had about 15 of our friends, we held our first party in October of […]
